Contrary to its spurious connection to Bram Stoker’s fictional blood-sucking Count Dracula, Romania is less intimidating than mysterious. The mighty Danube meanders through the country and marks its southern border, while impenetrable terrain deeper in the hinterland give rise to many self-sufficient villages rich with artisan crafts. Medieval elements intermingle with contemporary sights and sounds, leaving the unacquainted traveller both amused and none the wiser.
